I bought a sewing machine this morning. This is a sentence I never thought I’d write. I am a 72-year-old man who today bought his first (and hopefully last) sewing machine. What prompted this man’s decision was not linked to some sudden desire to make my own clothes.

I can tell you what prompted this decision in two words you are probably very familiar with: blue jeans. That’s right, blue jeans mean, denim. And, if you have short legs like mine, they’ve grown shorter over the years, having a sewing machine to hem them at will is quite the gift.  And, given the cost of blue jeans these days, quite the money saver.

When I started this I thought the only reason on earth for me to have a sewing machine is hemming jeans, pants. It seems I was wrong. A new option can open the door to some helpful possibilities. For example, I have a few coats and jackets whose zippers have “died.” Now, with this new machine, I can replace the zippers and gain a handful of coats and jackets.

It nice getting things sewn up in life.
