This Ritual Brings Me Peace

I don’t think I am unique when I say there are some forms of ritual that add to my day’s sense of peace. Even when the ritual in question is simply me witnessing a ritual, five days a week.

It takes place Monday through Friday from roughly 6:25 a.m. to 7 a.m., and I watch from my fourth-floor apartment window.

A couple of hundred yards behind the building where I live there is a two-story brick building that’s home to a well-loved bagel place. It opens 6:30 a.m.

Around 6:25 a.m. or so, three white garbage trucks pull up and park in the parking lot across the street from the bagel place.

When the doors open at 6:30 a.m., the three drivers walk across the street together for morning coffee and bagels.

At 7 a.m. they get back in their trucks and get on with their day.

Witnessing this ritual, the camaraderie between the three drivers, brings me a sense of peace.
