Here we go again. The other day a weather reporter said, and I quote, “It’s 50 degrees outside, but it feels like 37 degrees.”
I call this spinning the temperature. First, the weather report tells you what the temperature is, and then, in the very next breath, it tells you what the temperature will actually feel like when you go outside.
Now, which of the two announced temperatures do they think actually matters to the listener? Duh. Easy answer. If it feels like 37 degrees when I go outside, then it’s 37 degrees for those of us living in reality. The 50 degrees may as well be a myth.
Look, it is true that moisture in the air or a breeze changes how cold or warm it feels outside, and these facts have their place. However, the temperature you experience is the temperature that counts.
Right now, a local weather channel says it is 28 degrees outside, but feels like 32 degrees. Then it’s 32 degrees for those of us managing reality on planet earth.
Here’s an idea. Why not tell us how cold or warm it will feel first. Then you can tell us the temperature that has no relationship to how we feel.
As the old adage goes, “Reality, what a concept.”
